What air-conditioning/ refrigeration systems is it suited to?

COOLNOMIX® can be retrofitted to all refrigerant based commercial air conditioning and refrigeration installations controlled by a single thermostat and designed to work at fixed set-point temperatures. Provided the unit is well maintained and appropriately sized, COOLNOMIX® works with all of the following:

  • Split (wall or cassette) / Packaged / Split Ducted / Multi-Split;
  • VRV / VRF / Inverter;
  • Single phase or three phase;
  • Cool only or reverse cycle (no savings in heat mode);
  • Single-stage or dual-stage;
  • Air cooled or water cooled condensers.
  • Note: COOLNOMIX® is not currently suitable for central chilled water systems (large office buildings, hotels, shopping centres), freezers or evaporative coolers.

How hard is it to install?

COOLNOMIX® must be installed by a qualified technician. However the installation is relatively simple: it involves installing two temperature sensors and a control connection in line with the existing thermostat. In most cases, your HVAC/refrigeration technician will take less than an hour to do it.

Who pays for the installation under the rental model

In short you do. The install should be fairly straight forward and your HVAC technician should take less than an hour per unit to do it, but there are times when your installation is hard to get to and it can take longer. This is why we can’t include installs in our rental price.

What type of commercial customers is it best suited to?

Financially, the best savings are delivered to heavy air-conditioning / refrigeration users, that cool for a large proportion of the year, for long hours. It is perfect for supermarkets, cinemas, gyms, retail stores, restaurants, food processors, and offices.

What about temperature stability and comfort levels?

COOLNOMIX®’s ORS® first order priority is to ensure the required room temperature is delivered before looking to extract energy savings. COOLNOMIX® typically improves temperature control in air-conditioning and refrigeration systems. In contrast with most installations having room/space temperature variations of 1-2°C, its dual temperature sensor approach commonly limits room temperature variations to 50% of that experienced without COOLNOMIX®.

If we achieve the same amount of thermodynamic work, mustn’t we be using the same amount of mechanical work?

No we don’t, and the best way to explain this is to use a car analogy.

When you travel in a car from A to B, your petrol consumption varies depending on the circumstances, or based on the load. You use more petrol if you drive faster, fully loaded, with the hand break on, uphill, with flat tyres, or against strong wind. Conversely you use less petrol when you minimise these loads.

By constantly minimising the load, COOLNOMIX® runs the compressor more efficiently, getting from A to B for minimal work, using less energy.

What factors determine whether COOLNOMIX® saves 15 or 40%?

It is difficult to say exactly in most cases, but generally:

  • a well maintained system, with the right refrigerant levels, clean filters and a healthy compressor are a must. It need not be new, but it must work properly;
  • the larger the room being cooled, the better the savings;
  • the lower the heat load in the room, the better the savings;
  • the more effective the condenser (better able to remove heat), the better the savings;
  • relative to a perfectly sized system, if the system is undersized, savings will be less (or non-existent), if the system is oversized, savings will be more.

Will it void my warranties?

Air conditioners have expected lifetimes of 15 to 20 years; consequently, the vast majority are not under warranty. For those units that are, COOLNOMIX® is merely an intelligent thermostat, which does not interfere with the cooling system, the compressor, the refrigerant or the control boards – all operate as normal.

If COOLNOMIX® was to void a warranty, it would mean all third party thermostats would too.

Does increasing the number of stop-starts damage the compressor?

COOLNOMIX® has specific protection included within its functionality, including protection against too frequent cycling of the compressor and assurance that every re-start is not under load, since the suction and discharge pressures are in equilibrium. As a result there is no adverse effect on the operational life of the compressor of the air-conditioning unit.

Our internationally patented technology “Optimized Refrigerant Supply (ORS®) which is embedded in COOLNOMIX® units, incorporates protection against the foregoing risks” which ensures a minimum of 4 minutes run time, and only restarts the compressor when pressures have fallen to low levels. Keep in mind that it is the length of the compressor off-time that delivers the energy savings, not the frequency of stop/starts. Compressor operational life-times are specified in the numbers of hours of running-time, so if anything it will increase the compressors lifetime.

What is ORS™?

Optimized Refrigerant Supply (ORS™) is our unique, patented advanced control technology for refrigerant based systems. All COOLNOMIX® products make use of ORS™ to achieve an appropriate balance between energy consumption and the supply of refrigerant needed to deliver required comfort levels.

Why doesn’t the air conditioning manufacturers include this technology?

We are continually seeking discussions with the manufacturers who in our view should be installing this technology.

Can COOLNOMIX® ORS™ technology be used with inverter based systems?

COOLNOMIX® ORS™ can be made to work with inverter based systems although inverters are not recommended as a prime area of focus.

Inverter based systems reduce energy consumption by slowing the compressor down (rather than allowing it to stop completely).

By contrast the COOLNOMIX® ORS™ technology works to turn the compressor OFF when it has completed its useful work which is a different control strategy. In common with government/automotive industry advice on turning automobile engines off when not in use, we believe that turning the compressor OFF delivers a greater contribution in reducing running costs.

Standards / Certification

COOLNOMIX® units are certified to operate in most markets, carrying ETL, CE, C-Tick, FCC and RoHS certifications.

How do I know COOLNOMIX® isn’t “too good to be true”?

There are over 10,000 COOLNOMIX® units currently deployed worldwide in air-conditioning and refrigeration. A large number of sites have conducted thorough before-after verified tests, with savings ranging from 13% to 60%. In most cases, it is best to expect savings in the 20-40% range.

  • has been awarded the Green Innovations Award by the HK Environmental Campaign Committee, an environmental excellence scheme run by the Hong Kong Government;
  • is listed in the Massachusetts Clean Energy Centre’s Commercially Ready Technology List;
  • has been approved for inclusion on the UK Government’s Energy Technology List, through which customers may enhanced tax benefits;
  • was the sole cooling system energy saving winner in the energy and water competitive tender run by the USA Department of Defence under their Environmental Research Programme. COOLNOMIX® is now under independent trial.
